How to identify leather

NATURAL LEATHER vs SYNTHETIC?

The smell
the first thing we can notice is the very characteristic smell of the real leather. Depending on the leather treatment process, it can be more or less perceptible.

Leather surface
from the bottom, the natural leather is smooth, has a capillary, fleshy texture, a bit like suede. The bottom of synthetic is covered with a textile fabric.

Touch
real natural leather is much more flexible, gentle and soft to the touch. Synthetics are definitely more stiff and hard.

Leather edges
the cross-section of the natural leather is uniform, whereas in the synthetic you caan see inconsistencies. Unfortunately, this can not always be verified in the finished product when the edges of the material are already covered.

Texture
real leather surface is always irregular, in case of artificial leather a specific pattern is visible.

Water
natural leather breathes, in case of so-called open (aniline) leather, water gets inside and evaporates after some time. Synthetic do not let water through. This can be verified by using one drop of water dropped onto the surface of the material.

Fire
You can also carry out a fire test ....;), but we can assume that it is not absolutely necessary when we want to check the material or product.

When we approach (do not touch!) fire to the leather - it will not react. Artificial leather in such a situation can start to give off an unpleasant odor and even start to smoke or melt.

LABEL - the easiest way is to check the label, sometimes there is a specific leather patch symbol.

PRICE - real leather is never cheap :)
